The Biofabrique Vienna is a pilot project of the Vienna Business Agency and Atelier LUMA, a programme of LUMA Arles, in partnership with the TU Wien (Institute of Architectural Design). Based on the bioregional design approach of Atelier LUMA, a method is being jointly developed to convert unused local resources into materials for architecture and design.
In a co-creation process, mentors and students as well as national and international experts from the creative industries, science, the public sector and industry will realise the first phase of a real production and research site.
At the Nordwestbahnhof festival site, visitors can daily follow the progress made in material development in the open workshop and teaching setting of the TU Wien: from raw material analyses to the development of new construction materials, the whole innovation process can be experienced.
The excavated material from the Subway Expansion of U2xU5 for example, can become a valuable resource for the further construction of Vienna's largest infrastructure and climate project. Together with partners like Wiener Linien, Bäckerei Ströck and Wienerberger AG, the potential for utilising recyclable materials in urban areas will be demonstrated.
In addition to highlighting unutilised resources in Vienna, the aim is also to formulate a future business model for a real production facility for bioregional materials in Vienna.
The results of the first Biofabrique Vienna will also find their first real-life application in a collaborative design process: the hospitality area of the Vienna Design Week 2024 will be designed together and thereby becomes the first showcase of Biofabrique Vienna.
